Welcome to The Flying V Diner, a vegetarian diner opening in Washington, D.C. in less than a year! The Flying V will be a 1950s-style diner (chrome, counter, soda fountain, jukebox, etc.) serving vegan interpretations of traditional American diner food for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late at night.
In the past few months we have been looking at possible locations and altering our original ambitious plans. After much discussion we decided that the most successful opening strategy involves growth - building up to our original idea rather than going for (and likely ending up) broke. The most obvious changes are in our plans for location, hours, and our menu.
One of the most important aspects of location is convenience, thus we will open within blocks of a Metro station. Currently we are looking for a location along the Red Line from Gallery Place/Chinatown to Adams-Morgan, and along the Green/Yellow Line from Archives/Navy Memorial to Columbia Heights. We will determine our opening hours based on our final location, but as of now we believe that breakfast through late night is more feasible than 24-hours (although this remains our eventual goal). Finally, we have revamped our proposed menu, changing to a limited permanent menu and numerous daily/weekly specials.
Currently we are a few weeks away from being ready. That is, ready to find a location and sign a lease. We believe that we can open within two months of signing a lease. But choosing a location is the biggest decision we have to make, and we won't settle for less than the best. That means our search could take two months or twelve months. We hope to open by the end of the year at the latest - hopefully as soon as August, since D.C. has waited too long for a classic vegetarian diner.

April 26, 2007 Location update: Over the past three weeks we have found a number of great sites for The Flying V Diner. Suddenly this idea that's been floating around for so long seems very real and very imminent. The locations we are looking at are on North Capitol Street near the New York Avenue Metro and U Street between Adams-Morgan and 7th Street. One intriguing possibility is to lease an empty lot and buy a prefrabricated diner, a "silver twinkie." Stranger things have happened. If one of these locations works out we will sign a lease in the next three weeks, so keep an eye on the web site and look out for a big announcement on our e-mailing list. I hope that you're as excited as we are!
